Statement

How do marine ecosystems respond to global change? This question drives my research. I am a biological oceanographer trained to investigate large-scale processes at sea, and combine this with controlled experiments and models to mechanistically understand natural processes. I am one of few scientists worldwide able to culture different gelatinous organisms. This allows me to conduct experiments, which I have learned to tie with other disciplines such as genomics. I have established collaboration with internatio-nally leading scientific partners across fields from climate change, physics, mathematics to engineering. In my opinion, the combination of own skills and networking is the key for advancing science. Here, my strength is to take leadership and ask the difficult questions that need coordinated, inter-disciplinary collaboration and experiments to be addressed. Creating a stimulating, curiosity driven science environment across disciplines is my mantra, with active communication of results to the science community and wider public.
